Last Name Origins

The surname Andreasen is a patronymic name that originates from Scandinavian countries, particularly Denmark and Norway. It means 'son of Andreas,' with 'Andreas' being derived from the Greek name 'Ανδρέας' (Andreás), which itself comes from 'ἀνήρ' (anér) meaning 'man' or 'warrior.' The suffix '-sen' is a Scandinavian indicator for 'son of,' thus Andreasen translates to 'son of Andrew' in English. Pedersen is also a patronymic surname common in Denmark and Norway, as well as other Scandinavian countries. It directly translates to 'son of Peder,' where 'Peder' is the Danish and Norwegian form of the name Peter. The name Peter has its roots in the Greek word 'πέτρος' (petros), meaning 'rock' or 'stone.' As with Andreasen, the '-sen' suffix denotes lineage, indicating that Pedersen would mean 'son of Peter' in English.
